Province looking for tighter rules on home daycares
The province hopes to make some changes this fall that would strengthen rules for home childcare.
Education Minister Liz Sandals says officials have been reviewing the Day Nurseries Act over the past few months.
Sandals says she has the expectation Ministry of Education inspectors will alert other officials if they notice something which is outside of their authority - such as health violations. However, she admits communication could be improved.
As it stands, Ministry of Education inspectors can't close a facility for a health violation. If they don't report it to health officials, it could go unnoticed.
This comes as the Toronto Star revealed a number unlicensed daycares in Oakville and Burlington show a list of health and safety issues including unsanitary conditions and a rodent problem.
Sandals hopes these changes to the Act would close any gaps in oversight.
